Pinpointing the people and places that put this town on the map is our jam all year round, but we shift into high gear each spring, gathering a gaggle of local notables to help determine which ones deserve to be called Boston’s Best. This year, we convened our panel of judges–arts impresarios, media mavens, hospitality stalwarts, nonprofit heads and sundry other overachievers–in a private room at Grill 23 & Bar, where we fiercely debated between bites of rib-eye and sips of wine. In the bleary-eyed morning after, we began tabulating their ballots, adding nominations from readers, contributors and staff, and got to work vetting the finalists. Only the very best made it into the pages that follow. We hope they help you chart a course for urban explorations in the year ahead.

Founded by Harvard inventor David Edwards, Le Lab Cambridge is the first outpost of Edwards’ Paris cultural lab, and it’ll certainly get your head spinning. From a jellyfish exhibit that illustrated environmental woes to a virtual-reality experience that let users feel like they’re flying, Le Lab challenges visitors to open their minds. The space has also hosted a music residency for the innovative Ecce Ensemble, and it’s home to the inventive Cafe ArtScience, proving it’s not just smart–it’s well-rounded, too.
